The African Development Bank on Thursday approved a $234 million loan to Morocco to support the expansion of its high-speed rail network and the development of its infrastructure.
The bank explained in a statement that the financing aims to enhance the capacity and increase the operational efficiency of the railway line linking Kenitra and Marrakech, which accounts for a large share of passenger and freight traffic in Morocco.
This funding comes as part of a broader $10 billion investment plan that the Kingdom intends to implement to expand railway networks between and within cities, including the construction of a high-speed train line to Marrakech, as part of its preparations to host the 2030 World Cup finals in partnership with Spain and Portugal.
The new high-speed train line will extend from the city of Kenitra on the Atlantic coast to the city of Marrakech, a distance of approximately 430 kilometers, passing through the capital Rabat and the city of Casablanca.
