Analysis released today by the Ampere Energy Research Centre shows that solar power became the largest source of electricity production in the European Union last month, generating about 25% of the EU's electricity.

The Empyr Research Center stated that the share of solar energy in electricity production in the EU countries during last June exceeded the share of nuclear energy, which reached 21% of the total electricity production in the EU, the share of natural gas, which reached 15%, wind energy, 14%, hydropower, 12%, and coal, 8%.

This is only the third time that solar power has topped the list of sources of electricity production in the European Union, after May 2026 and June 2025. This record figure reflects the rapid growth of solar energy projects in the 27-member European Union over the past five years, where solar power represented only 10% of electricity production in the European Union in June 2021.

Germany also recorded a record high for the share of solar energy in its electricity production during the past two months, producing 33% of total electricity production in May and then 36% in June, according to a report by the Empyr Center.

The center noted that the increase in solar energy production coincided with the relative increase in electricity demand during May and June, as a result of the increased demand for air conditioning and cooling equipment in light of the abnormal heat waves that hit large areas of Europe during the two months.

He added that solar energy helped stabilize electricity supplies, as the use of other energy sources reached its limits due to hot weather conditions and weak wind power.
