After Infantino ate Trump's gambit

In chess, a gambit is not just a strategy of sacrificing a pawn, but a trap: a chess player deliberately gives up small pieces in order to gain a more advantageous position in the next move.

Gambit, which comes from the Italian word gambetto (to trap), has become a popular term as a tactic for a player who deliberately sacrifices material (pawns or other pieces) in order to gain an advantage.

The goal of gambit tactics in this board game is to control the center of the game, open up attack routes, or also speed up the development of important pieces to gain space.

However, gambits no longer exist solely on the chessboard. On a political scale, they have become a metaphor for a risky move that appears to be a sacrifice but is actually designed to create a greater advantage, whether in the form of bargaining power, public support, or strategic dominance.

It seems that FIFA President Gianni Infantino is not aware of this, as he is now faced with the political chessboard of the 2026 World Cup.

This gambit was started by United States President Donald Trump.

United States striker Folarin Balogun was initially shown a straight red card after a hard tackle on Bosnia and Herzegovina player Tarik Muharemovic in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup.

Balogun, the US's top scorer in the tournament with three goals, is set to miss the tournament due to a suspension for his red card when the US meets Belgium in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup

Trump then took the initiative by opening talks with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Following the closed-door discussions, FIFA released an official statement on July 6 stating that Balogun would not receive a red card.

This policy was taken based on FIFA Disciplinary Committee rules article 27 to suspend the punishment of the former Arsenal player.

Trump merely offered his pawn as bait in negotiations. If the pawn wasn't used, Trump wouldn't see the failure of the attempt as a major loss. Conversely, successfully overturning Balogun's ban represents a symbolic victory: a president able to intervene in the decisions of the world's largest sporting institution.

His tactical move of placing a trap pawn was actually eaten by Infantino.
