Argentine international defender Nicolas Otamendi has become the first player from the national team to officially announce his retirement from international play, days after the end of his country's journey in the 2026 World Cup.
In a message posted on social media, the 2022 World Cup champion recalled his childhood dream, saying: "Since I was little, I dreamed of wearing the Argentina national team jersey. This was the greatest honor football has given me."
He concluded: "I defended it with all my heart, with pride, and with the responsibility of knowing what it means to millions of Argentinians," before mentioning his last participation in the 2026 World Cup final: "The result was not what we hoped for, but I leave with my head held high, convinced that this team fought until the last moment."
Otamendi offered a heartfelt greeting to the Argentine fans: "Thank you for your unconditional love, for every flag, for every chant. Every time the national anthem is played, you make us not just eleven players on the field, but millions defending the same dream."
The player, who won the 2022 World Cup and finished as runner-up in 2026, concluded his message with touching words: "Titles remain in history, but the love for these colors lasts a lifetime. Thank you, Argentina, and goodbye to our national team."
It is worth noting that Otamendi's retirement is limited to the international level only, as he will continue his football career with clubs after his recent transfer to the Argentine club River Plate.
