Paraguay's national team bid farewell to the 2026 World Cup after losing 0-1 to France in the round of 16, but their Argentinian coach, Gustavo Alfaro, stole the show with touching and humane statements in which he praised what his players had done despite the elimination.
Alvaro said that the difference between the two teams is not limited to technical capabilities, but extends to the living conditions in which the players grew up, explaining that France includes stars who compete for the Ballon d'Or and have international experience, while his team includes players, many of whom lived through harsh social and humanitarian conditions.
He added: "I told the players that we would be facing players competing for the Ballon d'Or, while our players are fighting for a living. Some of them didn't know their father, and others went through great tragedies, but that was not an excuse for us, but rather an incentive to prove that we are capable of succeeding."
The Argentine coach revealed touching stories within the team, noting that goalkeeper Orlando Gil went through a financial crisis during which he had to sell his belongings to help his daughter, stressing that these sacrifices reflect the character of the group that fought until the last moment against one of the top contenders for the title.
Alvaro expressed his pride in what his players had achieved in the tournament, stressing that Paraguay had forced France to fight until the end, and that the penalty kick goal was the only difference between the two teams, considering that the performance reflects the great development that Paraguayan football has witnessed.
He concluded his speech with a message for the future, calling for greater investment in the development of football and the building of new generations capable of competing, stressing that what was achieved in the 2026 World Cup should be a starting point towards the 2030 World Cup, not an end to the project.
