Media reports today revealed that FC Barcelona has received compensation from FIFA due to the World Cup tournament.
The World Cup is nearing its end, with Argentina facing Spain tonight in the final, while England beat France 6-4 to claim third place.
The newspaper "Sport" stated that Barcelona will receive compensation from "FIFA" due to the injury of its player Frenkie de Jong during the World Cup, and the value of this compensation depends on the number of days that the Dutch international will be absent from the fields.
Barcelona suffered a major blow to their ranks, after it became clear that De Jong’s injury was not minor, and he will be out of action for up to four months.
Sport noted that this compensation is based on the Club Protection Act, which was introduced by FIFA in June 2023, where compensation is provided if international players suffer an injury that keeps them off the field for more than 28 days.
This compensation includes the schedule of international matches classified as “A” and which take place on specific dates within the FIFA international match calendar.
This compensation also includes international friendly matches in preparation for a continental tournament such as the Euros, Copa America and the World Cup, while De Jong was injured against Morocco in the round of 32 of the World Cup.
This law stipulates a maximum compensation of up to 7.5 million euros per injury and per player, which is approximately 20,548 euros for each day the player is absent. The compensation is calculated based on the salary paid by the club to the player as an employee, including social security contributions, and does not include bonuses, exceptional payments, performance bonuses, or signing bonuses.
FIFA will stop paying compensation to clubs once the player recovers and returns to his team's training, while the amount Barcelona will receive will depend on the final diagnosis of De Jong's injury, as well as the total time he needs to recover and return to group training with the rest of his teammates.
Reports indicate that De Jong will be out for four to six months and will undergo surgery, which will earn Barcelona at least €2 million in compensation.
