Bogor Hornbills, from zero to champion

Bogor Hornbills, from zero to champion

On the floor of the Soemantri Brodjonegoro Kuningan Student Sports Hall, at the end of June, the Bogor Hornbills players hugged each other shortly after the final buzzer sounded.

The 64-61 victory over Pelita Jaya Jakarta confirmed something that many would have never imagined a year ago: the Hornbills are officially the 2026 GoPay Indonesian Basketball League (IBL) champions.

The league trophy changed hands again. For the second consecutive season, the visiting team celebrated their title victory with the stadium displaying the Pelita Jaya Arena.

For the Hornbills, the victory capped a journey that changed drastically in just one season. In the 2025 IBL, they failed to even reach the playoffs after finishing 10th. Few considered them a title contender when the 2026 season began.

That change came with Spanish coach Cesar Camara. From the start of the season, he made no secret of his goals. He came to Bogor not to simply guide the team to the playoffs, but to build a work culture capable of leading the Hornbills to championship glory.

The results began to show throughout the regular season. The Hornbills performed more consistently than the previous season and finished third in the standings with a record of 14 wins and six losses. However, the road to the title was never smooth.

They lost by one point to Kesatria Bengawan Solo in the first game of the first round of the playoffs. This situation forced the Hornbills to respond as the series shifted to Bogor. Two subsequent wins propelled them to the semifinals.

That momentum continued against Satria Muda Pertamina. The Hornbills closed out the series with a dramatic 82-79 victory in the fourth game, taking a 3-1 lead, securing their place in the final.

Interestingly, Cesar Camara previously served as an assistant coach for Satria Muda for two seasons and even served as head coach for the 2025 IBL All-Indonesia competition.

The final then pitted the Hornbills against Pelita Jaya, a team that in recent years has almost always been the ultimate measure of strength in the IBL, having been a regular in the final for six years.

This season also marked the first finals to use a best-of-five format. Whereas previously a team only needed two wins to win, now a team needs three wins out of five matches, demanding consistency.

The final series saw both teams take turns seizing momentum. Pelita Jaya opened the final with a 90-87 victory before the Hornbills responded decisively, 83-63, in the second game.

Playing in Bogor, Pelita Jaya regained the lead with a 74-61 victory in the third game. The Hornbills refused to give up, forcing a decider with an 85-72 victory.

Game five presented a different scenario when the match returned to Jakarta. Despite not playing in front of their home crowd, the Hornbills played aggressively from the first quarter. Stephaun Branch and Travin Thibodeaux immediately put their team ahead 24-11. That double-digit lead proved crucial going into halftime.

Pelita Jaya turned the game around after halftime. A full-court press gradually narrowed the scoreline. Jeff Withey's return also strengthened the defense under the basket, preventing the Hornbills from scoring freely.
