Officials from cybersecurity firm Kaspersky stated that online gambling content distributors are exploiting content with popular topics and digital platforms with high levels of interaction to reach many internet users.
" Online gambling is one of the many themes exploited by criminals to lure users into sharing personal information, downloading malicious files , or conducting financial transactions," said Defi Nofitra, Kaspersky's country manager for Indonesia, when contacted.
Besides online gambling perpetrators, he said, other cybercriminals such as online fraudsters also utilize popular digital content and platforms to spread phishing links , fake websites, and fake mobile applications to reach their targets.
Defi stated that the high level of digital activity among Indonesians makes Indonesia an attractive target for cybercriminals.
Therefore, he said, broader efforts beyond content blocking are needed to address the increasing threat of crime in the digital space.
"This issue should not be seen solely as a law enforcement challenge. It is as important an issue as any in digital trust and cybersecurity," he said.
