Spain's Marc Cucurella mocked Argentina's Lionel Messi after what happened between them in Sunday's match at the 2026 World Cup.
MetLife Stadium hosted the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, where the latter won 1-0.
A controversial incident occurred between Messi and Marc Cucurella, where the latter spoke to him while placing his hand over his mouth, which angered the Argentine captain, who alerted the referee to what was happening in order to apply the Vinicius rule.
Cucurella was asked about the matter and responded in statements published by the French network "rmc": "Messi was not happy with what I told him, so he went to talk to the referee. He wanted me sent off, and that's clear."
He added: "I did not expect him to behave that way, especially since he is a role model for children. What will they say or learn from him in such situations?"
Cucurella, for his part, did not explain why he put his hand over his mouth or what he said to Messi in that dramatic moment.
