Major General Mohamed El-Sherbiny, Director of the General Administration of Civil Protection in Cairo, died this morning, as a result of injuries he sustained during operations to control a huge fire that broke out in the Manshiyat Nasser area.
Major General El-Sherbiny suffered severe bruises and acute suffocation while firefighters and security forces were dealing with a massive fire that broke out inside a wood warehouse located at the bottom of a residential building. The intensity and repercussions of the fire caused the entire building to collapse on top of the rescuers.
In addition to the Civil Protection Director, the sudden collapse of the building during firefighting operations resulted in the martyrdom of Captain Abdul Rahman Al-Adawi and two police officers, after large concrete pieces fell directly on them at the scene of the accident, while four other members of the Civil Protection forces were transferred to hospitals to receive emergency treatment for varying injuries.
The Cairo Security Directorate's emergency operations room received a report of a fire at a lumber warehouse. Firefighters immediately rushed to the scene, where they found that the highly flammable materials had contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze. Authorities deployed 17 fire engines, supported by large water tankers and a hydraulic ladder, and established a strict security cordon to protect neighboring buildings and facilitate the movement of ambulances.
The fire containment and extinguishing operations continued for more than five continuous hours of hard work, before the teams were able to fully control the situation, and the Egyptian Public Prosecution took over the investigation into the circumstances of the tragic incident.
