FIFA President Gianni Infantino has spoken out regarding the controversy surrounding the suspension of United States (US) striker Folarin Balogun.
He emphasized that the decision to allow Balogun to play against Belgium in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup rests entirely with FIFA's independent judicial body.
"FIFA's judicial bodies operate independently without interference from any party. Their independence is crucial to the credibility and integrity of football, and it must always be respected," Infantino said, as quoted by FIFA Media.
Infantino said the basis used in every decision on a case is the FIFA Disciplinary Code, applicable regulations, and the facts of the case.
He also acknowledged receiving a phone call from United States President Donald Trump regarding the Balogun case. However, he denied any interference in the decision-making process.
"I did receive a call from President Donald Trump, as I have received calls from heads of state, government officials and football stakeholders from around the world," Infantino said.
