Portugal were knocked out of the 2026 World Cup after losing 1-0 to Spain on Monday evening in the round of 16.
The Portuguese national team failed to continue its journey towards winning the World Cup title for the first time in its history.
Following the end of the match, Spaniard Roberto Martinez, the coach of the Portuguese national team, officially announced his departure from his position.
Martinez said at the press conference that his contract with the Portuguese national team ended with this loss, and indicated that he did everything to help the Portuguese national team and achieve success, but luck was not on his side in the World Cup.
Martinez took over the Portuguese national team after a long stint with the Belgian national team, and succeeded in winning the UEFA Nations League title last year with the Portuguese national team.
