Harry Kane believes the England national team lost because they played too defensively

England captain Harry Kane believes his team lost because they chose to play too defensively after taking an early lead over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup semifinal at Atlanta Stadium on Thursday.

According to him, this strategy is not enough to win a match at the World Cup semifinal level.

"It's disappointing for the team, the staff, and the fans. We played well for most of the game. But after going 1-0 up, it felt like we were just trying to defend our lead. At this level (in the semi-finals), that's not enough," Kane was quoted as saying by FIFA.

England's dream of reaching the 2026 World Cup final was dashed after a 2-1 defeat to Argentina. The Three Lions took the lead through Anthony Gordon before being pegged back by goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez in the final minutes.

The Bayern Munich striker admitted the result was incredibly painful as all the players had given their all to help England progress this far in the tournament.
