Intelligent barrier robot controls dynamic traffic lanes in China

China is testing an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered lane-delimiting robot that can automatically change lane directions based on traffic density.

When one direction is congested, the robot will move the road divider to increase the required lane capacity. This system utilizes sensors and AI to maintain smooth traffic flow, especially during rush hour.

According to local traffic police, intersections where the lane-limiting robots are installed usually provide two lanes for right turns and one lane for left turns.

During peak traffic times, such as during rush hour and rush hour, the barrier robot will move to turn the contraflow lane into a temporary left-turn lane, thus helping to reduce congestion in the left-turn lane.

This is one example of traffic barrier robots being implemented across China, most of which use “one-switch control” and provide voice warnings.

The robot uses solar power for battery power and the presence of this technology helps improve traffic efficiency and reduce congestion in urban areas.
