Liverpool beat local Premier League rivals Sunderland 4-2 in new Spanish manager Andoni Iraola's first game in charge, but the victory came at a price after defender Joe Gomez was injured.

Gomez, 29, left the field ten minutes after the start of the match played on Sunday, and then Kieran Morrison, Dominic Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa and Luis Koumas scored the goals that gave Liverpool the victory.

"There are a lot of things that need to be corrected, and that's obvious because it's the first day," Iraola said in an interview with Liverpool FC's website. "It was clear that the players were slow to move; they had been training."

He continued, "So we lacked some energy. But this will give us a good starting point to improve things. Perhaps the worst news was Joe's injury. We were happy because we had been doing all the training without any players missing. Unfortunately for us, we lost Joe at the beginning of the match."

Liverpool will play preseason friendlies against Wrexham, Leeds United, Monaco and Como, before opening their Premier League campaign away to Newcastle on August 23.
