French national team striker Kylian Mbappe temporarily became the all-time top scorer at the World Cup after scoring twice in the 4-6 defeat of England in the 2026 World Cup third-place playoff match at Miami Stadium, United States.
However, Mbappe still couldn't hide his disappointment after failing to advance to the final after being defeated 0-2 by Spain in the semifinal match.
"I'd rather not be the all-time top scorer if it meant playing in tomorrow's final. It's good for my legacy, but right now it's not the first thing on my mind," Mbappe said after the match, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.
The two goals took Mbappé's tally at the World Cup finals to 22. The Real Madrid striker surpassed Lionel Messi's record of 21 goals.
However, Mbappe's record can still be surpassed by Messi, who is scheduled to appear for Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final against Spain, Monday (20/7) at 02.00 WIB.
