French national team midfielder Michael Olise made history at the 2026 World Cup by breaking the record for most assists in a single World Cup edition, previously held by Brazilian legend Pele since 1970.
The record was set when France lost 4-6 to England in the 2026 World Cup third-place match on Sunday. Olise, who came on as a substitute at the start of the second half to replace Rayan Cherki, recorded an assist for Kylian Mbappe's goal.
The assist was Olise's seventh throughout the tournament. Thus, he finished as the top assist provider at the 2026 World Cup and earned the title of assist king of the tournament.
Olise was quite far ahead of his closest competitors. Kylian Mbappe, Bruno Guimaraes, Martin Odegaard, and Brahim Diaz, who each only collected four assists throughout the competition.
