Libya is plunged into total darkness

Most areas of Libya experienced a general power outage early Saturday morning after a number of main power generation stations went out of service, including the Gulf and Misrata stations.

The Ministry of Electricity of the government appointed by the House of Representatives announced in an official statement that this sudden malfunction caused the loss of about 1350 megawatts of production capacity, which led to the collapse of the network frequency and large parts of it going out of service.

The ministry attributed the blackout to the disconnection of the line connecting the Misrata and Khoms stations at a voltage of 400 kV, which caused a reverse flow of electrical power that was directed towards the western network with a load of 350 megawatts.

In a swift response, the technical teams of the electricity sector began their urgent work, as the operation, control and station teams began to gradually rebuild the network, according to the approved technical plans, with the generation units and stations being restarted successively.

The Ministry of Electricity confirmed that all its technical teams are on full alert, and that work is continuing around the clock to address the situation and restore stability to the electrical grid, in preparation for the return of electricity to all affected areas in a stable manner.
