Member of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives Abdullah, has asked regional governments and law enforcement agencies to increase efforts to provide legal education to citizens to reduce conflicts between residents that arise due to low knowledge of law and ethics.
According to him, conflicts between neighbors that are often reported on social media platforms are mostly triggered by residents' low understanding of the law and ethics of being neighbors.
In many cases, those who break the rules actually feel they are the most righteous and the most aggressive, while citizens who want to live in order are actually victims of intimidation.
He said that so far, problems that often trigger conflicts between residents include personal actions or business activities that disturb neighbors or the residential environment.
Therefore, Abdullah stated the need to increase citizens' understanding of law and order in society.
According to him, public education needs to include providing an understanding of the prohibition on burning garbage carelessly, running businesses that produce unpleasant odors or waste that pollutes the environment, and carrying out activities that create noise and disturb the comfort of residents.
Provisions regarding these matters are contained in Law Number 18 of 2008 concerning Waste Management, Law Number 32 of 2009 concerning Environmental Protection and Management, and Decree of the Minister of State for the Environment Number 48 of 1996 concerning Noise Level Standards.
Abdullah also highlighted repeated acts of intimidation carried out by a resident against his neighbor in the Pancoran Mas area, Depok, West Java.
According to him, repeated acts of intimidation that included throwing objects, damaging fences, playing loud music, and threats made by residents in this case have criminal consequences.
