Meta alerts parents when children discuss self-harm with AI

Meta has updated its protection features for teenage users by adding a system that can notify parents if a child's conversation with Meta AI leads to self-harm.

this feature is here to strengthen parental supervision of teenagers' activities on Meta's platform, after the company previously opened access for families to conversation topics between teenagers and artificial intelligence (AI).

Meta explains that when underage users discuss topics that indicate a risk to personal safety, Meta AI will still direct them to relevant support services and encourage them to seek help from trusted adults.

From now on, the system will also send notifications to parents or guardians connected through the family monitoring feature. In addition to notifications, Meta will provide information resources and guidance on steps they can take to help their child.
