NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced that Miami Heat Governor Micky Arison was unanimously elected as the new Chairman of the NBA Board of Governors and will officially assume his duties after the Board of Governors meeting in September 2026.
The NBA website, Wednesday, stated that Arison would replace Toronto Raptors Governor Larry Tanenbaum, who has served since September 2017.
"I am grateful for Larry's dedication while leading the NBA Board of Governors, and Micky's long track record of serving the league, strong relationships with team owners, and deep understanding of the game and the business of the NBA make him an exceptional successor," Silver said.
The NBA commissioner praised Tanenbaum's contributions over nearly three decades with the Toronto Raptors and nine years leading the NBA Board of Governors.
According to Silver, Arison's extensive experience as a team owner and his understanding of both sports and business aspects make him the right person for the position.
Larry Tanenbaum said it has been a great honor to lead the NBA Board of Governors for nearly a decade.
He also expressed his hope that Arison would be successful in carrying out his new duties and continue to bring the NBA to global growth.
Meanwhile, the newly elected Arison said he is ready to work with Silver, the league office, and team governors to continue supporting clubs and players, while providing the best possible experience for NBA fans.
According to NBA data, Arison is the second-longest-serving team governor in the NBA at 31 years.
Under his leadership, the Miami Heat won three NBA championships and appeared in seven NBA finals.
He was also inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025, and served as Managing General Partner of the Miami Heat.
