Urologist and andrologist Nika Akhflediani warned that an erection lasting more than four hours without sexual arousal could lead to serious complications in the male reproductive system.

According to him, this condition is known as priapism (a permanent erection ) , and it leads to the accumulation of blood in the tissues of the penis, which impedes normal blood flow.

He says: "If an erection lasts for more than four hours, the penile tissues begin to suffer from a lack of oxygen. The disruption of blood flow leads to changes that may become irreversible if the patient is not treated in a timely manner."

The doctor confirms that priapism is not a normal condition, but requires immediate medical intervention, as the earlier the patient receives treatment, the greater the chances of avoiding complications and preserving sexual and reproductive function.

He points out that painful and prolonged erections can occur due to various reasons, including certain medications such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, and alpha-blockers used to lower blood pressure, as well as blood disorders, injuries, and vascular problems. If this condition arises, it is not advisable to wait for it to resolve on its own; rather, immediate medical attention should be sought.
