Montiel insists Argentina will try to control England

Argentina national team right-back Gonzalo Montiel said his squad will try to control the match when they face England in the 2026 World Cup semifinals.

"Obviously we prefer to control the ball and control the game," Montiel said before training at the Atlanta United Training Ground in Marietta, Georgia, on Tuesday.

However, the 29-year-old footballer, who plays for River Plate, emphasized that his team is ready for all eventualities, including if they are under pressure from England.

According to Montiel, Argentina consists of experienced players who have proven capable of bringing the Tango squad out of pressure.

At the 2026 World Cup, for example, Argentina often encountered difficulties in the knockout stages against Cape Verde, Egypt and Switzerland.

When facing Cape Verde in the round of 32, Argentina had to wait until the 111th minute to secure a 3-2 victory.

Then, when facing Egypt in the round of 16, Argentina even fell behind 0-2 before turning around to win 3-2.

Finally, when they met Switzerland in the quarter-finals, Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw until extra time, where their European opponents eventually lost 1-3.
