Persebaya Surabaya is using the 2026 President's Cup as part of the team's foundation-building process ahead of the 2026/2027 Super League competition, utilizing each match to hone their game, strengthen chemistry, and gauge the squad's readiness.
"We want to win every match, but we also have to be realistic about the team's condition, which is still in the process of being formed," said Persebaya coach Bernardo Tavares in Surabaya on Friday.
He explained that Persebaya, which is in Group B with Persija , PSMS Medan, and Port FC, will open its journey in the pre-season tournament by facing Persija Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium.
According to Tavares, the tight match schedule means the coaching team must be careful in managing physical conditions, including player rotation.
Therefore, he said, the eight substitution rule will be used to rotate players and give all squad members the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in match situations.
He believes the match should be the best way to see the communication between players, their understanding of their respective roles, and the adaptability of the new recruits who are making their first appearance in Indonesian football competition.
