Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong is confirmed to be out of action for Barcelona at the start of the 2026/27 season due to a right knee ligament injury.
"Medical tests have confirmed that Frenkie de Jong has a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee," Barcelona.
The club added that De Jong will undergo treatment under the supervision of Barcelona's medical team. His recovery process will continue to be monitored over the next few weeks.
However, Barcelona has not yet provided a definite estimate for the length of the player's absence. However, surgery is currently confirmed to be unnecessary.
According to a report by Mundo Deportivo, De Jong will miss the La Liga opener against Elche on August 24. In the worst-case scenario, the 29-year-old midfielder could be out for several months.
De Jong sustained the injury while representing the Dutch national team at the 2026 World Cup. He started all four of the Netherlands' matches before his team was eliminated by Morocco in the round of 32.
