Scientists from Volgograd State Technical University have created a new rubber capable of absorbing heat during operation in extremely high temperature conditions.
Professor Victor Kaplov, the project's scientific director, explained that the demand for this type of rubber is increasing with the development of industrial processes, the increasing depth of oil extraction, and the complexity of operating conditions.
He said: "Our team, with the support of Novosibirsk State University, has developed a new composition of fire-resistant materials containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes, including tubes integrated with components with functional properties. This rubber is specially designed to reduce the overheating of structures, as it absorbs heat when operating in harsh conditions and high temperatures. It can be used, for example, in oil extraction operations."
He noted that the innovative rubber can be used in conjunction with a fire-resistant and expandable material, previously developed by university scientists, that can withstand combustion temperatures up to 2,500 degrees Celsius.
He added: "The new rubber and fire-resistant material achieve higher performance when used together. Their applications are not limited to the oil sector, but also extend to the chemical industries, the aircraft industry, the spacecraft industry, and other fields that require heat- and fire-resistant materials."
