Russian academician in the field of reconstructive surgery and radiology, Igor Reshetov, warned that resorting to dental implants without taking into account the natural changes in the mouth may cause serious diseases, including cancer.
"Resorting to dental implants for purely aesthetic reasons, without considering the natural changes in occlusion, may constitute a risk factor for developing cancer," Reshetov said in an interview with the Russian news agency TASS. "The occlusion (the way the upper and lower teeth meet) changes with age, as the skeletal structure adapts to daily loads. Installing dental implants without a careful study of the jaw's position may cause frequent friction and ulcers in the oral mucosa due to malocclusion. These chronic frictions constitute an important triggering factor for the risk of developing cancerous tumors."
He added: "With the widespread use of dental implants recently, cases of bone sarcoma affecting the jaws have increased."
For his part, Russian doctor and specialist in oral diseases, Igor Kuzmin, pointed out that thinning of the bone around a dental implant often occurs as a result of three main factors: a decrease in the normal load on the bone tissue, bacterial infections, in addition to the inappropriate choice of the type of implant itself.
These warnings come at a time when there is a noticeable increase in demand for cosmetic dental procedures, which necessitates a comprehensive medical consultation before proceeding with any surgical procedure, not limited to the aesthetic aspect only, but also including an assessment of the general health condition of the mouth and bones.
