The Spanish news agency EFE reported that Madrid and Rabat have agreed to return migrants who entered the city of Ceuta irregularly in recent days and hand them over to the Moroccan side as soon as possible.
Ceuta, located on the North African coast, has witnessed a sharp increase in the number of migrants attempting to reach it from Moroccan territory in recent days, either by swimming or walking.
The agency stated that both sides pledged to review and implement the necessary procedures as quickly as possible to return all people who entered the city illegally.
According to the agency's data, between 1,500 and 2,000 people arrived in Ceuta in the past ten days. Thousands of young Moroccans also gathered today, Thursday, near the border between the Moroccan city of Fnideq and Ceuta, attempting to cross the border fence.
She reported that hundreds of migrants managed to climb over the security barriers and enter Ceuta, noting that this part of the border was not under police guard at that moment, while members of the Moroccan auxiliary forces withdrew as the crowds approached.
The authorities in the city of Ceuta had asked the Spanish central government to send the army to secure the border with Morocco, against the backdrop of the increasing influx of irregular migrants into the city.
