The Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia Erick Thohir appreciated the Bhinneka Run 2026 which was held at Plaza Keong Mas, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah.
Erick expressed his appreciation for the running event, which was attended by thousands of runners in the 3K, 5K, and 10K categories, which provided space for people with disabilities to participate. He believes this demonstrates that sport is a right for every citizen without exception.
"We really appreciate this running event that provides a platform for people with disabilities to participate. This shows that sport belongs to everyone, without exception," said Erick, as quoted from the Ministry of Youth and Sports' official website on Sunday.
According to Minister of Youth and Sports Erick, implementing inclusive sports is part of the government's commitment to providing equal opportunities for all people to live a healthy lifestyle. The government continues to strive to increase the availability of disability-friendly sports facilities and infrastructure to ensure wider access.
He stated that the number of people with disabilities in Indonesia has reached approximately 25.9 million, 11 percent of whom are actively involved in sports. This situation motivates the government to continue providing opportunities and increasing sports participation for people with disabilities.
In addition to encouraging the participation of people with disabilities, the Ministry of Youth and Sports is making every effort to extend the contributions of disabled athletes after they retire. One such effort is providing them with opportunities to work as educators.
"We want athletes with disabilities to continue serving after their retirement. Their experiences and achievements are invaluable to share and to guide our younger siblings in schools, both at the national and regional levels, to produce a generation of athletes with disabilities who will become even more accomplished," said Erick.
Meanwhile, the annual running event, themed "Different Stories, One Finish Line," was held to celebrate the spirit of unity through a healthy lifestyle.
Along the course, runners were treated to a rich cultural atmosphere, from traditional music to cheering in traditional Indonesian costumes. This event was more than just a run; it served as a celebration of national identity that was inclusive, healthy, and full of positive energy.
