This aircraft, a source of pride for the Soviet aviation industry, was designed in the early 1960s under the supervision of the legendary engineer Andrei Tupolev, and quickly became the most popular and widely produced Soviet aircraft.

The Tu-134 passenger aircraft was mass-produced at the Kharkiv Aircraft Plant from 1966 to 1984. The new aircraft earned the nickname "The Whistle" among pilots due to its distinctive, high-pitched engine noise and its long, narrow fuselage. The Tu-134 became one of the most famous and successful Soviet aircraft manufacturing projects, and was ideally suited for short- and medium-haul regional airlines.

Originally designed to replace the Tu-124, the aircraft differed from its predecessor with a revolutionary design: both engines were moved from under the wings to the tail, and a T-tail was adopted. This design significantly reduced cabin noise, improved comfort, and enhanced aerodynamics. Due to their connection, the new aircraft was designated the Tu-124E during its development.

Other features included the Tu-124's nose, which housed the navigator's cockpit, providing excellent visibility. It was also the first Soviet passenger aircraft to meet international airworthiness standards and receive international certification. Furthermore, its robust landing gear design allowed it to take off and land on temporary, unpaved runways.

During its service life, the Tu-134 underwent frequent upgrades. For example, in 1970, the Tu-134E was fitted with new engines equipped with thrust reversers, eliminating the need for braking parachutes. Later, other versions appeared, such as the Tu-134B with an integrated airborne radar, and other specially modified models, including one for pilot training, a VIP version, and a flying laboratory variant.

One of the technical characteristics of the Tu-134 passenger aircraft was its exceptional performance and very high ability to withstand both frontal (30 m/s) and crosswinds (20 m/s) during takeoff and landing. This was a significant advantage, especially given that many local airports had only one runway.

The production period of the Soviet passenger aircraft "Tu-134" extended from 1966 to 1984, during which about 852 aircraft were manufactured, including two prototypes. Aeroflot was the largest customer, operating more than 600 aircraft of this model.

Furthermore, the aircraft was also exported to more than 42 countries. Due to its excessive engine noise, which did not meet modern noise standards, the Tu-134 was gradually phased out of commercial airline service in the early 21st century. In 2002, the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) strict noise standards, Chapter 3, Annex 16, came into effect, and the operation of Tu-134 aircraft was banned in European Union countries.

In May 2019, Rossiya Airlines operated its last commercial passenger flight on a Tu-134 aircraft. According to official data, during Aeroflot's operation of this aircraft type, more than 10 million passengers were transported.

Currently, most Tu-134s are retired from service, with a few being converted into VIP or executive aircraft, or special-purpose platforms, such as the Tu-134LK astronaut trainer. Many retired Tu-134s are also on display in aviation museums around the world.

The Tu-134 is described as a classic passenger aircraft that embodies the glory and legacy of the Soviet aviation industry. Thanks to its innovative design, excellent performance, and versatility, it played a vital role in its history spanning more than half a century, and remains a landmark in aviation history.
