The head coach of the Indonesian U18 women's national basketball team, Fredy, is optimistic that his squad can reach the top four at the 2026 FIBA U18 Women's Asia Cup Division B in Bangkok, Thailand.
Fredy said the target remains realistic because the majority of players have been through the process together since the SEABA qualifying round.
"I'm pretty confident we can make it to the top four. If we're lucky, we might even make it to the final," said Fredy, met during a training session in South Tangerang on Tuesday.
The current training focus is to refine the program that has been running since the team was formed.
He explained that the training material had not changed much even though he was appointed as head coach to replace Amin Prihantono, who was unable to accompany the team to face the tournament.
Fredy himself is an assistant coach and has been involved in the process since the initial selection.
According to Fredy, the limited time for team development is not a reason to lower targets. He stated that the coaching staff's job is to maximize the available time to prepare the players for competition at the Asian level.
"Whatever time we're given, our job is simply to prepare them to perform optimally at FIBA Asia," he said.
He added that the support from the DPP Perbasi during the training camp had been excellent. The team's various needs were deemed to have been met, allowing the players to focus on their training program.
"They've always been supportive and tried to provide what the team needs. So far, everything has been pretty well met," said Fredy.
The Indonesian U18 women's national basketball team began training camps on Monday (July 6th) with 12 players preparing to compete in the 2026 FIBA U18 Women's Asia Cup Division B.
Indonesia is in Group A alongside India, Thailand, and Oman. Group B includes Samoa, the Cook Islands, Lebanon, and Kazakhstan.
To maintain their chances of promotion to Division A, the Red and White team must finish in the top three in the group stage to qualify for the quarter-finals before chasing a ticket to the final.
