Substitute Ferran Torres said destiny was on Spain's side to win the World Cup after his extra-time goal secured a 1-0 victory over 10-man Argentina in Sunday's final.
Torres, who replaced Mikel Oyarzabal in the 62nd minute, tapped in Nico Williams' pass in the 106th minute to give Spain its second World Cup title and first since 2010.
"I think ultimately the goal came from 47 million people, not just us here," said Torres, who had not scored all tournament before Sunday's final.
"Today destiny was decided, destiny was on our side to be champions. Today we were far from our people, but we tried to be as close as possible to them."
Torres acknowledged that facing Lionel Messi's Argentina in the final was a daunting prospect. However, the Barcelona forward said Spain never doubted their approach.
"Finals are difficult. When Messi is on the other side, of course you are worried, but we always believed in ourselves and tried to play our football, and I think we did that once again," he said.
Torres had been in the spotlight throughout the tournament before scoring the winner in Sunday's final.
