Trump and Infantino face red card protests in the final match

Football fans staged a unique protest against US President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino during Sunday's World Cup final .

Red cards were handed out in New York and New Jersey to fans heading to MetLife Stadium for the Spain-Argentina match.

Protest organizers hope fans will raise red cards during the trophy presentation as a show of anger towards Trump and Infantino. The pair are scheduled to present the World Cup trophy to the captain of the winning team.

The red cards carried a QR code that referred to the “Final Red Card” platform, which provided instructions to fans on when to raise them.

The website stated: “After review, due to political corruption and abuse of the presidency, the decision is a red card!”

The website said it simulates a video assistant review in a match. FIFA President Infantino and US President Trump have faced fierce criticism over the past two weeks after lifting the suspension on US striker Folarin Balogun despite him receiving a red card, allowing him to participate in the round of 16 match against Belgium.

The lifting of the ban, a first in the history of the modern World Cup, came after a phone call from Trump to Infantino, who confirmed that it did not affect the decision.

Balogun participated in the game held in Seattle, but he was unable to prevent the 4-1 defeat.

Against Belgium.
