US President Donald Trump has decided to temporarily suspend certain tariffs on phosphate fertilizers imported from Morocco for a period of eight months. The White House stated in a press release published on its website that this measure will help ensure sufficient supplies of these fertilizers for farmers, protect US food supplies, and support domestic agricultural production.
The statement added that this declaration constitutes an emergency regarding the threats to the availability of sufficient fertilizer supplies to meet American agricultural demand, in light of disruptions to global supply chains, as a result of the current situation in areas of tension.
The newspaper “Bayan Al-Youm” wrote in its Friday edition that Washington is turning to Moroccan phosphate to secure food security for Americans, due to the inadequacy of domestic American production of phosphate fertilizers to meet the needs of the agricultural sector, which has forced the search for sources capable of providing supplies regularly during the current stage.
The newspaper confirmed that Moroccan phosphate has become one of the elements of balance in the global fertilizer market, especially in light of the challenges facing international supply chains. This strengthens Morocco’s position as a reliable partner in securing basic materials related to food security, and a key player in a global market where the importance of strategic resources is increasing, the Moroccan newspaper says.
The White House explained that phosphate fertilizers are an essential plant nutrient, a vital component of agricultural production, and crucial for feeding the nation and maintaining American food security. It noted that global supply chains for phosphate fertilizers and related inputs have recently been disrupted by events such as conflicts in fertilizer-producing regions and trade measures taken by major fertilizer-producing countries.
The statement said that the action taken by Donald Trump would allow American farmers to obtain sufficient and timely supplies of phosphate fertilizers in the near term to mitigate any major risks that might threaten domestic food supplies.
