In a remarkable scientific development, a recent study has revealed an unexpected link between some common foods and a serious heart rhythm disorder, opening the door to a new understanding of the relationship between gut health and heart health.
According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, eating foods such as egg yolks and beef may be linked to an increased risk of atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm disorder that is a leading cause of strokes and heart failure.
Researchers attribute this link to a chemical compound known as trimethylamine oxide (TMAO), which is formed in the gut as a result of the digestion of certain nutrients. Both carnitine and choline, found in high concentrations in egg yolks, beef, and liver, stimulate gut bacteria to produce this compound, which then enters the bloodstream and may affect heart function.
To test this hypothesis, researchers from the Cleveland Clinic in the United States analyzed blood samples from more than five thousand participants in the US. After excluding the influence of other risk factors, such as age, high blood pressure, and obesity, it was found that people who scored highest on TMAO in their blood were 70% more likely to develop atrial fibrillation than those with lower levels, suggesting that this compound may represent an independent risk factor.
To support these findings, the team conducted experiments on mice, dividing the animals into two groups; one group received a choline-rich diet, while the other received a normal diet. The results showed that the mice in the first group developed atrial fibrillation earlier than those in the other group.
In a further step, the researchers used an experimental drug called iodomethylcholine, which works by inhibiting the gut bacteria responsible for converting choline into TMAO. This resulted in a delay in the onset of heart rhythm disturbances in mice. However, the researchers emphasized that this drug has not yet been tested on humans and is still in its early research stages.
Dr. Robert Coeth, an electrophysiologist at the Cleveland Clinic and lead author of the study, said: "Most current treatments focus on managing atrial fibrillation after it has developed, but our results suggest the possibility of intervening at an early stage through dietary modification."
The researchers added that these findings reinforce the growing evidence of the pivotal role of the gut microbiome in cardiovascular health, and may pave the way for new preventative strategies targeting gut bacteria.
