US Vice President JD Vance expressed his annoyance at Iranian statements denying the existence of peace talks between the two countries , claiming that he does not understand Tehran's tactics.
“The Iranians, while technical talks with the United States for peace continue, are saying: No, no, there are no peace talks going on,” Vance said on “The Michelle Knowles Show” Tuesday.
He stated that he finds this approach “interesting and disturbing at the same time,” and considered it “an Iranian negotiating tactic and rhetorical style that I cannot fully understand.”
He noted that the United States still possesses strong leverage “should Iran behave inappropriately,” stressing that Washington expects permanent and verifiable nuclear commitments from Tehran.
Regarding the ongoing negotiations with Iran, he said: “We still have many rounds ahead of us.”
On June 18, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding, and on June 21 they began negotiations to conclude an agreement to end the war that began between the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28.
The memorandum of understanding stipulates a cessation of hostilities, the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iran, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, after its closure caused a rise in oil and gas prices and inflation rates.
Vance answered questions regarding the ongoing talks between Israel and Lebanon, stating that negotiations between the two sides had made progress.
He confirmed that Tel Aviv and Beirut are conducting direct talks without intermediaries.
He continued: “Lebanon and Israel are now talking directly, something that did not exist a few months ago, and it seems that the two sides generally meet on similar broad lines.”
