The White House commented on reports that US President Donald Trump discussed with FIFA President Gianni Infantino the possibility of running for the next UN Secretary-General position.
White House spokeswoman Carolyn Leavitt said she did not know whether the topic had been raised during meetings between Trump and Infantino, adding: "I don't know if they discussed it."
Levitt noted that Trump and Infantino communicate frequently, stressing that the US president has respect for the FIFA president.
The New York Post had previously reported that Trump intended to support Infantino's candidacy to succeed current UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
According to the established procedures, any candidate for the position must obtain the support of 9 out of 15 members of the UN Security Council, provided that none of the five permanent members uses its veto power, before the nomination is formally approved by the UN General Assembly.
The current Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, is scheduled to complete his term on December 31, 2026.
