Alexander Zverev has risen to second in the ATP rankings, replacing Carlos Alcaraz, despite having to settle for runner-up at Wimbledon 2026 after losing to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the final.
This achievement continues Zverev's positive trend throughout this season after winning his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, then reaching the Wimbledon final for the first time in his career.
"There's been improvement this year. I think I've been able to put pressure on them. I haven't beaten them this year, but I've been able to push them to their limits.
Zverev's rise to world number two also strengthens his status as a major challenger to the dominance of Sinner and Alcaraz, who have dominated major tournaments in the past two seasons.
Throughout the season, Zverev took Alcaraz to five sets in the Australian Open semifinals before again giving Sinner a tough fight in the Wimbledon final that ended in four sets.
"Even though it went to four sets, I think it was a very tight four sets and it could have gone to five," said the German.
Despite the loss, Zverev admitted he was satisfied with the quality of play displayed on Centre Court.
