A massive fire has consumed more than 10,000 acres of forest in the Verde area of Nevada, and is threatening more than 1,000 homes, US authorities said.

The National Interagency Fire Center deemed the fires still out of control, while warnings and evacuation orders extended northward as the fires continued to burn.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County due to the fire.
"The Hook Fire is a very volatile event for us, as it is being fueled by the wind," said Richard Edwards, Chief of Fire and Rescue in Truckee Meadows, Washoe County, in a video posted on social media.

He added: "Wind-fueled fires are spreading very quickly into our residential areas, creating many challenges for firefighters to save homes and protect lives."

The U.S. Forest Service confirmed that nearly 1,000 homes threatened by the fire have been ordered to evacuate.
The fire caused a power outage affecting approximately 37,000 customers in the Truckee area and north of Lake Tahoe on Saturday night, after power was cut off to transmission lines.

Firefighters estimated the size of the fire at about 10,500 acres as of Saturday night, noting that it was spreading northeast, driven by the wind.
