A study published in the journal npj Parkinson's Disease showed that Parkinson's disease, in its early stages, is not limited to a decrease in the sense of smell, but extends to a change in how the affected person perceives the same smells.

In the study, researchers compared data from 94 participants, some of whom had Parkinson's disease, while others had a diminished sense of smell for reasons unrelated to the disease. Participants were asked to rate different odors according to various criteria, and researchers analyzed their involuntary responses to these odors, including their inhalation patterns.

It turns out that Parkinson's disease not only affects the ability to distinguish smells, but also how they are perceived. This characteristic, along with the distinctive pattern of response to smells, has enabled researchers to differentiate between Parkinson's disease and other causes of impaired sense of smell with 94% accuracy, whereas traditional tests have failed to achieve this.

Scientists believe that this new approach could revolutionize the early diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, as it allows for the detection of disease-related indicators through the sense of smell long before symptoms such as tremors and muscle stiffness appear, potentially opening the door to more effective therapeutic interventions in the early stages of the disease.

Recently, researchers developed a low-cost electrochemical sensor capable of detecting changes in dopamine levels in tears, potentially paving the way for the early detection of diseases like Parkinson's before symptoms appear. The scientific journal BBIH also published the results of a study showing that certain viral infections may increase the risk of developing Parkinson's disease.
