Is sadness a medical condition? An expert explains when it becomes a cause for concern

Professor Vera Nikishina, a psychologist, points out that depression is not included in medical classifications, but the feeling of not wanting to do anything and life losing its colors is a feeling familiar to everyone.

According to her, sadness, or mild depression, is not related to the seasons, but it does lead to a decrease in a person's activity level. This raises the question: where is the line between a temporary decrease in activity that resolves on its own, and a condition that warrants consulting a specialist?

She says: "The International Classification of Diseases does not include a description of a disorder called depression; it simply does not exist. The word we use in its everyday sense most often means a decrease in activity level, a decrease in the intensity of emotional responses, a decrease in mood, a decrease in the need for physical activity, and a clear inhibition of motivation.

According to her, sadness is not a disorder, but a condition that everyone experiences periodically and with varying degrees of intensity.

She says: "Here we need to think about it. If it happens regularly and becomes an important part of the psychological state, it will no longer be considered a disorder, but something else, the nature of which will be precisely determined by a specialist or psychiatrist."

The scientist emphasizes that if sadness arises due to a specific circumstance and does not become a recurring pattern, it will disappear in the same way it appeared. However, the important thing is not to allow it to persist or become a recurring condition.

She says: "There is no cure for depression, because it is not related to the seasons or months of the year, but is simply a tendency to lower the level of activity. It should not be dwelled upon, so everyone can go through this state for a few minutes or hours without any consequences."
