Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova defeated Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka in the round of 16 of the Toronto tournament, one of the WTA 1000 points tournaments.
The Russian player won the match in her favor by two sets to one, with scores of 7-6, 4-6 and 6-4.
The intense confrontation between the two players lasted two hours and 29 minutes.
Alexandrova currently holds the 19th position in the WTA world rankings, while Sabalenka tops the rankings.
This result marks Alexandrova's third career victory against the world's number one, with all three of her wins coming in 1000-point tournaments.
In the quarter-finals of the Toronto tournament, Alexandrova will meet Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, ranked ninth in the world, who in turn qualified at the expense of American Amanda Anisimova, ranked tenth, after defeating her in two straight sets, 6-2 and 6-4.
