The Moroccan women's national football team has qualified for the 2027 World Cup finals, after reaching the semi-finals of the African Nations Cup currently being hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco.
Morocco's qualification for the global tournament came after a well-deserved 2-1 victory over South Africa in the quarter-final match of the continental championship in the capital, Rabat.
The match saw Morocco take a 2-0 lead with goals from Sakina Ouzraoui and Hanane Ait El Haj (from a penalty kick).
Despite Morocco's advantage, the team experienced moments of tension in the middle of the second half after player Thembi Kgatlana succeeded in reducing the gap in favor of South Africa. However, the Moroccan team maintained its lead and held on until the final whistle to secure qualification for the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup finals.
The "Atlas Lionesses" secured their second consecutive appearance in the World Cup, following their historic achievement in the 2023 edition.
The tournament regulations stipulate that the four teams that reach the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations qualify directly for the Women's World Cup finals, which will be hosted by Brazil from June 24 to July 25, 2027.
The Moroccan national team awaits the winner of the quarter-final match between Cameroon and Nigeria in the semi-finals of the continental competition, to meet them next Sunday.
The Moroccan national team is seeking to compete for the African title, noting that the tournament's record has seen only three teams crowned so far, with Nigeria at the top with ten titles, followed by Equatorial Guinea with two titles, and then South Africa with one title.
