Common medications that reduce the risk of bone fractures in elderly people with diabetes

A study published in JAMA Network Open showed that GLP-1 drugs may reduce the risk of serious fractures in older adults with type 2 diabetes.

Researchers analyzed medical data from approximately 134,000 diabetic patients in the United States, aged between 50 and 90, and compared patients who started taking GLP-1 medications with those taking another common class of diabetes drugs such as DPP-4 inhibitors.

Over three years of monitoring, researchers observed that patients taking GLP-1 medications had a nearly 21% lower risk of fractures from minor injuries, with the greatest reductions observed in hip, femur, and spine fractures.

The scientists noted that doctors had previously feared that rapid weight loss caused by these drugs might weaken bones, but their study proved the opposite. However, the study was observational, so it does not prove a direct protective effect of these drugs on bone tissue.

Despite the many benefits of GLP-1 drugs, some doctors warn that they may pose a risk to patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The mechanism of action of these drugs depends on rapid weight loss, a mechanism that may conflict with the biological needs of patients with neuromuscular disorders and accelerate the deterioration of their health.

A new study has also revealed that GLP-1 drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity may be associated with an increased risk of alopecia areata, and a recent scientific review has also shown that weight loss drugs do not lead to a significant improvement in the quality of life of their users, and that their benefits may be accompanied by side effects that require balancing the gains and risks before starting treatment.
