A report issued by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control confirmed that more than 240 people across Europe have been infected with the West Nile virus this year.
The European Centre noted in its report issued yesterday, Friday, that a total of 241 human cases have been reported since the start of the transmission season up to Wednesday.
The center added that 139 cases had been reported in Italy and 61 in Greece. Seventeen cases were recorded in Spain and 13 in North Macedonia. Romania recorded six cases and France four, while one case was recorded in Germany.
The World Health Organization called late last month for increased vigilance, following the recording of several cases of West Nile fever in southern Europe.
The organization added that the West Nile virus is usually transmitted between mosquitoes and birds. However, infected mosquitoes can also bite humans and transmit the infection, most often between July and September.
