Scientists have discovered a way to convert coconut oil into environmentally friendly jet fuel by mixing it with acetone and methanol or ethanol. This development will help solve waste disposal problems, particularly in Asia.

A team of researchers from Osaka University in Japan has developed a method for producing this biofuel using a mixture of coconut oil, acetone, and either methanol or ethanol. This method operates at ambient temperatures and pressures, requires minimal energy, and results in cleaner and safer production. The result is two types of biofuel—methyl esters and ethyl esters of fatty acids—which can be blended with conventional jet fuel, such as Jet A-1.
Scientists tested different fuel blend ratios to determine their effect on the performance of a small turbojet engine. They found that the higher the proportion of biofuel in the blend, the greater the fuel consumption, likely due to variations in the energy released during combustion. However, the engine's overall efficiency remained good, nearly comparable to that of conventional fuels. Most importantly, hydrocarbon emissions, harmful exhaust gases, were reduced. Meanwhile, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions remained almost constant, which has a positive impact on the environment.
According to the researchers, this mixture can be used in existing aircraft engines without loss of efficiency or increased pollution. This is particularly important for Southeast Asian countries, where coconuts are abundant, yet about 30 percent of the harvest is wasted because it is unsuitable for sale, even though it could be used as fuel. This solves two problems simultaneously—waste disposal and energy shortages.
