Libya: New security arrangements in Zawiya, led by the Chief of Staff, to contain tensions and protect vital installations

The city of Zawiya in western Libya is witnessing new security arrangements aimed at reorganizing the security landscape.

This comes through the formation of a security arrangements committee led by the General Staff of the Libyan Army, under the supervision of the Western Coast Military Region, and with the participation of security and military leaders in the city of Zawiya.

Military sources from the city of Zawiya told RT that the understandings regarding the formation of the committee are still in the preliminary stage and have not yet been formulated into a decision or official record, but the consultations have made significant progress, amid a trend towards unifying security and military efforts within the city and establishing a joint mechanism to deal with security developments.

According to the sources, the committee, if officially adopted, is expected to undertake the tasks of developing a unified security plan for the city, coordinating the deployment of forces and security agencies, defining responsibilities between formations and concerned parties, in addition to working on securing vital and oil installations, public facilities, main roads and city entrances.

The committee is also expected to work on containing any tensions or armed clashes, preventing uncoordinated armed displays, raising the level of coordination between security and military agencies in the event of any emergency, as well as putting in place special arrangements to protect oil facilities and fuel storage and distribution sites, in light of the recent security developments in Zawiya.

These understandings come after a series of security meetings, including a meeting between the head of the Security Threats Agency, Mohammed Al-Bahroun, and the advisor to the head of the Government of National Unity for National Security, Ibrahim Al-Dabaiba, followed by another meeting that brought together Al-Bahroun and the commander of Battalion 55, Muammar Al-Dhawi, within the framework of consultations regarding the security situation in the western region and the city of Zawiya.

The planned arrangements come in the wake of a period of security tension in and around the city of Zawiya, marked by clashes and armed movements, as well as attacks targeting vital and oil facilities.

Over the past few days, the region has witnessed a series of attacks using drones targeting sites belonging to the oil sector in Zawiya, including facilities and tanks inside or near the Zawiya refinery, causing material damage, leaks, and the ignition of one of the fuel tanks, amid warnings of the repercussions of these attacks on the safety of workers and facilities and on fuel supplies in the Libyan market.

The National Oil Corporation had warned of the danger of continued attacks on oil assets, noting that the recurrence of such incidents could lead to significant human and material losses, and threaten the continuity of oil operations and fuel supplies.

In light of these developments, the proposed security arrangements stand out as an attempt to reset the security landscape in Zawiya, unify the mechanisms for dealing with armed groups and official agencies, and prioritize securing oil installations and vital facilities and preventing the spread of tension to other areas on the west coast.
