This came as a replacement for Chad’s Hussein Ibrahim Taha, during an emergency meeting held at the organization’s headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Ould Cheikh Ahmed, born in 1960, will assume this vital post for five years, amid high hopes of strengthening the organization's role on the international stage.
In his first statement following his election, the Mauritanian diplomat expressed his sincere thanks to the member states for granting him this trust, stressing that nearly two billion Muslims are looking forward to an organization that is "more present and influential," capable of serving their causes, defending their interests, and contributing to building a future of security, peace, and dignity.

In this context, he pledged to intensify the organization’s efforts to combat Islamophobia and hate speech, and to promote dialogue and build broader partnerships with the international community.
The new Secretary-General has a rich diplomatic record spanning decades in the fields of international mediation, development and humanitarian affairs. He served as Mauritania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs between 2018 and 2022, before moving on to the position of Director of the Office of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani.
Before returning to the governmental scene in his country, he held high-level positions within the United Nations system.
