Poland's Ministry of Digital Affairs confirmed that a cyberattack on MyDr, one of the country's largest providers of electronic medical records systems, had resulted in the theft of data related to nearly 19 million Polish citizens.
Poland's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski, emphasized that the leaked data could not be freely accessed by the public or offered for sale on the black market, according to a report by the Polish national news agency, PAP.
The stolen database contained more than 2 terabytes of information, including data related to medications and prescriptions.
Gawkowski said authorities are working to move affected medical records to a state-run system, where individuals can check whether their information has been stolen.
He also urged citizens to limit the use of their national identity numbers as a precaution.
Security agencies are investigating the group behind the attack. Gawkowski said there is currently no indication of involvement from outside Poland, adding that security vulnerabilities related to the incident have been identified and fixed.
