A poll showed that about two-thirds of citizens in Germany believe that events and developments in the United States are affecting their country more than they did before Donald Trump's second term.
According to a survey conducted by the Forsa Institute for Opinion Measurement on behalf of the German-language magazine International Politics, 67% of participants agreed that American influence had increased, while 18% believed the influence was similar to previous levels, and 11% thought it had declined compared to previous years.
The survey included 1,004 people and was conducted on August 14, with a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
The view that American influence over Germany has grown since Trump’s return to the White House in January 2025 is prevalent across all age groups, demographics, and party affiliations.
But the poll showed a regional disparity, with 78% of East Germans saying that American influence is increasing, compared to 65% in the west of the country.
As for age groups, 18% of participants aged 60 and over believe that American influence has declined compared to years past, while this percentage does not exceed 2% among the 18-29 age group, and 6% among the 30-44 age group.
